Helping Students Get Job-Ready: Why Secondary Schools Should Offer Safe Pass Training
If you’re a teacher, guidance counselor, or TY coordinator, we’d love to help your students get job-ready.
As summer approaches, many Transition Year and Leaving Cert students will be looking for part-time work. For those considering jobs in construction, event setup, landscaping, or general site work, one thing is essential: a Safe Pass certification.
At Salutem Advisory & Training, we work with secondary schools across Ireland to help students get trained and certified before the summer. By offering Safe Pass training as part of a school program or TY activity, teachers can enhance students’ employability and equip them with valuable workplace safety skills.
Why Should Schools Offer Safe Pass Training?
1. Give Students a Head Start in the Job Market
A Safe Pass opens up more job opportunities for students. Many summer jobs and apprenticeships require it, and employers often prefer applicants who are already certified. By helping students get their Safe Pass before summer, schools can set them up for immediate employment success.
2. Safe Pass Certification Lasts for 4 Years
Unlike some workplace training that needs to be renewed annually, Safe Pass certification remains valid for four years. This means students who complete the course in Transition Year or 5th Year will still be covered for part-time summer jobs, apprenticeships, and even early full-time work after Leaving Cert. It’s an investment in their long-term employability.
3. Promote Workplace Safety from a Young Age
Understanding hazards, PPE, and emergency procedures is critical for any workplace. Safe Pass training helps instill a safety-first mindset—an invaluable skill whether students enter trades, engineering, or any hands-on profession.
4. Make it Easy and Accessible for Students
Many students struggle to find available Safe Pass courses in the busy summer months. By running a group session in school, teachers can ensure students secure their certification early and save parents the hassle of organizing training independently.
What’s Covered in a Safe Pass Course?
Our one-day Safe Pass training covers:
✅ Workplace hazards and risk assessment
✅ Safe use of equipment
✅ Personal protective equipment (PPE)
✅ Emergency procedures
✅ Construction health & safety laws
Upon successful completion, students receive an HSA Safe Pass Card, allowing them to work on construction sites and similar workplaces for four years.
More Training Options for Schools
In addition to Safe Pass, Salutem Advisory & Training offers other essential workplace safety courses, including:
Manual Handling Training – A must for roles involving lifting or carrying.
CPR & First Aid – Teaching life-saving skills for the workplace and beyond.
Fire Safety Training – Essential for emergency preparedness.
By combining these with Safe Pass, schools can offer a complete workplace safety package to prepare students for a range of industries.
